The Spark that Launched Muzi

From Emerging Artist to Muzi Creator
In her last months as an undergrad at Harvard University, Rachel Efron realized she wanted to be a singer/songwriter. While her classmates announced job recruitments, she mumbled her plans only when asked — so timid was she to claim this thing she felt deeply as her calling.
Without guidance, formal or otherwise, Rachel relied on those she trusted most: her favorite artists. She'd watch every interview by a songwriter. She'd read every biography of a novelist. Yes, she practiced piano and took voice lessons. But Rachel recognized the obstacle to her best songs wasn’t musical.
Her biggest obstacle was gaining access to creativity.
Ten years of self-discovery later, Rachel had written hundreds of songs, recorded albums, and toured both coasts. And then something unexpected happened — she began supporting other artists. She taught Songwriting at the Berkeley Jazzschool. She held an ongoing Songwriting Salon, serving songwriters across the US. She gave talks and held workshops. She became a songwriting coach for songwriters around the world.
Yet even as she talked about song form and melody composition, she couldn’t deny the biggest obstacle her clients faced wasn’t musical, it was the same as hers — gaining access to creativity.
Rachel helped artists thrive as never before. Much of it was deep listening to both song and songwriter. But all of it involved sharing her methods for accessing creativity. Though every psyche was different, there were common thees. Though every journey was different, patterns emerged.

Rachel also realized the methods she’d used to access her creativity also allowed others to access creativity. Though every psyche was distinct, there were common themes. Though every journey was different, they were universally helpful tools.
Rachel's clients often said she should write a book. But Rachel was hesitant to give people two hundred pages of her experiences and ideas — what Rachel really wanted to give people was an experience of themselves.
Rachel's clients often said she should write a book. But as much as Rachel wanted to continue serving artists, she cringed to think of summarizing her ideas and experiences. She didn't want to give people her. She wanted to help people find themselves.
So she made Muzi.
The Muzi Philosophy
Being creative is about accessing what’s already yours.

Creativity is You
We believe that every one of us has a creative voice that is ours and only ours. Every one of us has something distinct and vital to offer this world.
Creativity is Natural
We believe that to be creating is people’s natural state. If you aren’t creating, it’s not because you are “blocked” or “ungifted” or “not creative.” It’s because some aspect of yourself needs to be coaxed back into balance.

Creativity is Expansive
We believe creativity can be harnessed for every aspect of our lives. We serve traditional artists such as musicians, writers, and painters, but also educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, and beyond. We serve people of any age and at any stage in their creative journey.

Creativity is Belonging
We believe creativity connects us to ourselves and the world. And creativity thrives in the context of creative connection. We bring Muzis into connection with each other by offering glimpses into each other’s creative processes.

Creativity is Healthy
We believe that creativity is so much more than the negative myths we ascribe to it — that artists are broke, addicts, mentally ill, selfish, over-sensitive. Rather, we believe that creativity arises from creative health — inspiration, courage, discipline, rest, and connection. Likewise, we believe creativity is an often overlooked but crucial aspect of human health.

Creativity is Now
We believe that whether you’ve never created or you’re a Pulitzer Prize winner, what matters to your creativity is what you’re creating now. We support you on your journey to — and through — your next exciting project.

Our Mission
We’re on a mission to help people explore and develop creativity — to make creativity a thrilling, joyful, and sustainable part of their daily lived experience
